NISHLAM

“It is finished.”– this is Jesus last word on the cross, as we read in the Gospel of John (Jn 19:30). We always understand this exclamation of Jesus as the end of his earthly life, the end of his suffering and his redemptive work. Yet this is not only the closing sentence of his earthly life, but also the first word of his glorified life!

In Hebrew, as Jesus said these words on the cross,  “it is finished”  is nishlam. This term comes from the Hebrew word shalom meaning peace, wholeness, tranquility.

Jesus Christ does not simply end his earthly life and suffering, does not merely complete the work of redemption, but arrives in the kingdom of God, coming home to the Father: Father, into thy hands, I lay down my spirit.

The peace of communion with God is with Jesus throughout his ministry, he dies in this peace, and, after his resurrection, he greets the disciples with this peace: Peace to you.

Christ’s death on the cross is the beginning of our peace with God, the gift of peace of our way home to the Father.

Nishlam – peace is done, so that whoever believes in God’s love, which He has given to the world in Jesus, will not perish but have eternal life.

With peace in Christ, CE Association Oradea wishes blessed holidays to all our brothers and sisters!
